Abstract

Teaching in the Second Republic

During the five years of the Republic, public education witnessed a drive for reform and improvement quite unprecedented in the history of Spain. At the root of this education policy were the ideas of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza and the Partido Socialista Obrero Español. The two years of Radical/CED government saw an attempt to rectify the education policy of previous Republican governments. The social, political and economic conditions of the 1930s hampered the development and application of many of the initiatives that were undertaken. The right-wing and religious forces stoutly resisted those reforms that were initiated, and after the civil war they implacably imposed their new-found power.Salto de línea

Resumen

Durante el quinquenio republicano, la educación pública española recibió un impulso de reforma y mejora sin precedentes en nuestra historia. En el origen de esa política educativa estaban las aportaciones procedentes de la Institución Libre de Enseñanza y del Partido Socialista Obrero Español. El bienio radical-cedista trató de rectificar la política educativa de los anteriores gobiernos republicanos. Las condiciones sociales, políticas y económicas de los años treinta dificultaron el desarrollo y aplicación de muchas de las iniciativas emprendidas. Las fuerzas de derechas y confesionales opusieron firme resistencia a las reformas iniciadas, imponiendo, tras la guerra civil, de forma implacable su hegemonía.Salto de línea
